It’s one of the most exciting times of the year!
For some that might mean it’s almost time your children go back to school, or for others, maybe you’re enjoying the fact that the sun is shining and it’s Summer. However, it’s also an exciting time of year for another reason. August happens to hold one of the most anticipated competitions in the CrossFit community… you guessed it; it’s the 2017 annual CrossFit Games!
The Games have been running since 2007 and has changed drastically throughout the years. Not only has the competition become more fierce, so have the events. At the beginning of this week, Dave Castro, Director of the CrossFit Games, confirmed the rumours that an obstacle course was included in this year’s events (think American Ninja Warrior meets CrossFit Games). The Games is recognized as one of the largest fitness competitions worldwide. If you were able to participate in this year’s CrossFit Open (the first round of qualifications to be invited to the Games), it is an accomplishment to have been a part of the close to 400,000 athletes who challenged themselves for all 5 weeks of the Open.
Out of all these athletes, one gentleman stood out not only to our Solid Ground family, but to the CrossFit community worldwide. Patrick Vellner made a name for himself in 2016 when he finished 1st in the Open in Canada East, and was seen as a strong competitor going into the East Regionals where he finished 3rd despite a bicep tear during his first workout of the weekend. Patrick continued to prove that he deserved to be on the competition floor when he took home the title of 3rd Fittest Man on Earth at the end of last year’s Games. This year, Patrick finished the Open in 2nd place in Canada East.
If you have ever had the chance to watch Patrick work out, you know he is an extremely motivated and hardworking individual. It is incredible to watch someone with so much strength and power push through workouts and sometimes not even break a sweat! He has overcome various obstacles in order to do his absolute best. Not only is Patrick incredible at what he calls “exercise racing”, but he is also a full-time student at The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College pursuing his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Despite the demanding schedule of a Chiropractic student, there is never a time where you don’t see Patrick smiling or lighting up the room with his sense of humour.
The CrossFit Games takes place this coming weekend from August 3-6. It will be streamed through Facebook of the CrossFit Games’ page, as well as broadcasted on CBS. There are so many reasons to watch the Games: motivation for your own fitness pursuits, to see the best of the best compete, and the most important one- supporting Patrick Vellner in his pursuit to be the Fittest Man on Earth!
Pat, we are so lucky to have you as part of our community. You are a shining example of what it means to be someone who is dedicated, motivated, and let's nothing stand in the way of achieving greatness. The entire Solid Ground crew will be watching and cheering you on this weekend!
GOOD LUCK, VELLNER!!
