  • Coaches of Canada Member
  • NCCP Baseball Coach

Justin is both a decorated athlete and a talented coach. He has an impressive track record as a varsity baseball player and is making a name for himself in the CrossFit community, both as an athlete and coach.

Justin first stumbled upon the sport of CrossFit during his time on the varsity baseball team at Brock University. His teammates were taking their fitness to another level, implementing some of the baseline CrossFit workouts into their training regime. After a lifetime of training in traditional “globo gyms” and eating whatever he wanted, Justin found CrossFit to be extremely challenging. His initial experience was a “reality check” – at 5’8” and 195 lbs, he believed he was strong and fit. Once he immersed himself in the CrossFit community and began training consistently, not only was he able to transform his body (dropping 25 lbs and a significant amount of body fat), but he also improved his lifestyle to facilitate his growth as an athlete.

Justin is a talented coach who is sought after by multiple CrossFit gyms and is one of Ontario’s top CrossFit athletes.  His passion is to inspire people to achieve their goals and to create life-changing personal achievements of their own.

  • Certified personal trainer, nutrition and wellness specialist
  • 4th Degree Black Belt, Internationally experienced instructor

  • Built an independent Health Coaching business in Victoria, BC.

Rob’s experience in the fitness industry started at a young age. He began teaching martial arts at the age of 15.  By 18, he was a key staff member in the top martial arts school chain in Canada. Following University, Rob cut his teeth in membership and personal training sales in Victoria before returning to the world of martial arts as a co-owner and managing director. During this time Rob began networking with a group called M.A.U.I. – Martial Arts University International – a collection of the top 2% of martial arts entrepreneurs from around the world. Here, Rob learned the proven strategies for elite level training, teaching, customer service, sales, marketing, team building, and business management.

In 2009, Rob started his own business as a consultant, helping independent health clubs and other health-related companies with all levels of sales, marketing and business development. It was at that time that Rob was first introduced to the sport of CrossFit. During his first introductory class, the coach talked about earning a “black belt in fitness” – Rob was hooked immediately, and has been involved with the sport ever since.

Rob brings a level of strategy and business experience to the team that is helping to raise the bar in the CrossFit industry. His passion for helping other people realize their potential is contagious, and his commitment to creating a team that provides a world-class service is unfaltering.

  • York University – 3 year degree in Creative Advertising
  • Humber College – 1 year pre-service Fire Fighter Education and Training

Dan grew up playing on a soccer field and by the age of 18, he had made his way to the professional level.  When an injury forced him out of professional athletics, the relationship he developed with his trainer while rehabilitating that injury helped him realize that this was an amazing industry to be involved in.  He saw that there was a difference to be made in people’s lives.

Not only is Dan an athlete, but he brings an admirable amount of professional experience in the fitness industry.  He has been a successful small business owner, an integral part of a GoodLife Fitness club start-up team, a private consultant for fitness clubs in the GTA, and an elite level CrossFit trainer and manager at one of the longest standing CrossFit clubs in Ontario.

Dan’s commitment to his clients is second to none. He continues to exceed expectations, helping the people he works with to achieve a level of performance and life improvement they hadn’t previously thought possible.

Jon Mulder - Coach

  • CrossFit Level 2 Instructor
  • CSEP - Certified Personal Trainer
  • NCCP Weightlifting Course
  • CPR A + AED Training

Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Jon found CrossFit in 2009 while serving as a member of the Canadian Forces Reserves.  As one of the most unfit members of his unit, he was encouraged by an officer to try CrossFit.  With very little athletic experience, Jon tried CrossFit on his own and found it extremely humbling.  This sparked a love of human movement, learning and then educating others.  With this new-found interest, Jon attended the CrossFit Level 1 training certification in 2010 and began coaching others in the sport at his local box.  In 2016, Jon moved to the Greater Toronto Area to join the Solid Ground Coaching Staff, and he’s been an integral part of the team ever since!

Jon is an extremely passionate coach who loves to help others improve their quality of life.  If you’ve ever been around him, you know that his attention to detail and positive attitude are what allow him to help members pursue excellence.  When Jon’s not coaching our early morning warriors, you can likely find him doing his own training or relaxing with an episode of The Office.

Kimiko Taniishi - Coach, XFit Kids Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1 Instructor
  • CrossFit Gymnastics Certification
  • Attitude Nation Weightlifting
  • CPR/First Aid Training

Kimiko’s her name, and passion for health and fitness is her game!  Kimiko’s love for CrossFit began in 2013 when she had retired from competitive volleyball and was seeking a new challenge and outlet to avoid the dreaded “freshman 15”.  What began as a way to lose weight became a full-blown love affair with the sport of CrossFit and the community.  Thanks to CrossFit, Kimiko has a new appreciation for the beauty in strength.  As a Coach, she hopes to empower everyone around her to also see their strong as beautiful, and lead healthy lives.

WIth her eyes set on earning herself a coveted spot at CrossFit Regionals in the near future, Kimiko can usually be found training with the noon crew or working on her personal programming.  And if it’s Friday, be sure to find her with her favourite bubble tea in hand… because balance.

Justin Muir - Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1 Instructor
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR-C Training

Justin a.k.a “JM” was always physically active and regularly spent his days at the typical “globo gym” doing bench presses and bicep curls, but his approach to training changed after being introduced to CrossFit by a friend.  After initially cursing the different movements he had to learn, such as pull-ups and double-unders, Justin began to appreciate the variety in CrossFit workouts, and joined a local CrossFit gym.  Today, if you were to ask him to list his favourite CrossFit movements, he’d probably say pull-ups and double-unders.

Justin is part of the OG Solid Ground crew-  he helped us build Solid Ground to the sweet training grounds you see today and he was one of our first members!  From day one, he’s been committed to his training and growth as a Coach and member, and loves encouraging others to do the same.  Justin’s usually the first one to crack a joke in a workout as a reminder that you should never take anything too seriously.  His favourite part about coaching is seeing the community come together and watching members push one another to do their best in every workout.

Outside of the gym, Justin dreams of doughnuts and ice cream.  When he’s not playing the latest video game, he’s probably running around with his dog at the nearest dog park.

Adam Smalley - Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1 Instructor

Adam a.k.a “Smalley” began training with us shortly after we opened our doors in 2013 before joining our Coaching Staff the following year.  He brings positivity (and sweet playlists!) to every class he coaches.  He’s passionate about his desire to watch others grow and succeed, and he constantly encourages members to challenge themselves in their daily workouts.

When Adam’s not coaching, you’ll find him golfing, fishing for lake monsters, or playing hockey.  Adam loves any workout that pushes the envelope, particularly long grinders over 20 minutes, and anything with muscle-ups.  Fun fact: Adam previously set a personal goal to compete in CrossFit Regionals as a team and he was able to check this goal off his list this year after competing with team CrossFit Aurora Central at the 2017 East Regionals!

Lauren Halioua - XFit Kids Coach

  • Crossfit Level 1 Instructor
  • CPR A + AED Training
  • Bachelor of Education -  Primary/Junior Divisions
  • Yoga Instructor 450 hours - Specializing in Yin, Hatha, and Vinyasa

Lauren is a Kindergarten teacher by day and XFit Kids Coach by night.  If that wasn’t enough, she’s also a certified Yoga Instructor and loves to incorporate elements of the mind-body connection into all of her teaching, whether it’s in the classroom or the gym.  One of Lauren’s favourite thing about being a Coach is being able to combine her love of teaching with her passion for wellness… and being fortunate enough to call that her “job”.

Lauren first found CrossFit in December 2012 and it’s been a part of her daily routine ever since!  A true teacher through and through, Lauren’s greatest strength is her ability to get our young athletes excited about health and wellness, all while teaching them new and challenging movements.

Lauren loves long workouts that incorporate lots of running and heavy lifting- bonus points if there’s EDM blasting in the background!

Brandon Tamane - Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1 Instructor
  • CPR A + AED Training

Brandon has been CrossFitting since 2013, around the same time Solid Ground first opened its doors.  He helped us lay the sweet flooring we run around on and never really left… and we couldn’t be happier about that!

After turning away from all athletic pursuits in high school and never picking it up again, Brandon began to feel like he was falling behind.  Thankfully, his competitive nature told him it was his time to shine and in the summer of 2013, he did a complete 180- he dropped everything to focus on his health and fitness, and began training regularly.

When Brandon’s not working his full-time job or training with the class, you can find him strengthening his weaknesses, throwing around a heavy barbell (clusters and snatches are his favourite), or taking a long walk on the beach… maybe even all 3 in one day, if he’s lucky.

As a Coach, his favourite thing is getting to see the changes that take place in our members’ abilities, and helping them to realize their full potential.

Allen Medeiros - Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1 Instructor
  • CPR A + AED Training

Allen started training at Solid Ground in the summer of 2014 after being invited to “try something different” at one of our Family and Friend Day events and hasn’t looked back since!  Initially, Allen was a staple in our Barbell Club, but he eventually found himself joining a CrossFit class or two, and soon enough, Allen was doing back-to-back classes on the regular.  He loved that the sport of CrossFit offered variety in his training and kept him guessing, whereas his previous standard gym routine regularly left him bored and jumping from program to program.

After 3 years of dedication to training, eating better, and nourishing a passion for everything health and fitness, Allen’s goal as a Coach is to continuously share his wealth of knowledge and inspire others to make positive changes to their lifestyle.

Jess Lau - Assistant General Manager

  • CPR A + AED Training

Jess was introduced to CrossFit by a friend just before she entered her first year of University.  Intrigued, she “taught” herself how to do basic movements and did the CrossFit mainsite WODs at her student gym.  After a few years of training and realizing she wasn’t progressing, she joined her first CrossFit gym.  Fast forward to 2013- the first week Solid Ground opened its doors - when Jess and a crew from Lululemon came in for a group workout.  She sweat, she cried, she got her butt kicked… and she couldn’t wait to come back for more.

Since stepping through our doors, Jess has never left.  She considers the team/ members to be her second family, and Solid Ground as her home away from home, so it was only natural that in the fall of 2015, Jess began working as our Front Desk Manager.  She left briefly to pursue a career in her trade, but quickly realized that writing formal emails and filling out paperwork on the daily wasn’t the dream.  She eventually found her way back home to Solid Ground and gladly accepted the role as our Assistant General Manager.

The main thing you need to know about Jess is that she loves what CrossFit stands for: community, being better than yesterday, and having hard work pay off.  She considers it a privilege to “work” in a place where she constantly gets to meet new people, watch members achieve things they never thought possible, and be surrounded by a team of like-minded people.
